Out of Sangamon County, Illinois, a Hopewell type made of the Dover Chert "look-alike" Elco Flint found in southern Illinois--length is a strong 3&3/16" by 1&3/8"--slightly under 3/8" max thickness--durable blade, that length and thickness. The one surviving notch shows almost a "Snyders-like" round notch--the stem base shows absolutely no basal edge grinding--Hopewell knapping characteristics, both. A picture focusing on the tip area shows the extra care the Hopewell knapper went to, some fine pressure chipping--he got a bit 'rougher' as he formed the base. One face shows a cortex-type finish, what must have been the weathered outside of the flint the knapper utilized--Elco is a layer-type flint, so the preform must have been a fairly large flint slab. Wish I could tell you what the #53 signifies, but that could have been placed by the estate auctioneer--no way to know. The piece is guaranteed real, period.
