Some previous Email I received mentioned Missouri has a silicified sandstone that's somewhat like Wisconsin's Hixton "quartz" sandstone, whether it also was quarried in Illinois, east of St. Louis (where this St. Claire County, IL point was found)-- or was the quartz-like material a 'day trip' to a quarry site for some Dalton Culture knapper--some way or other the raw material made it to St. Claire County, Illinois. Length is 1&9/16" by 15/16", the preform was thin, crafted to a max thickness of 5/16"--it's a hard, brittle material, it took one skilled knapper to get a thin preform--before even attempting to fashion a knife/ projectile. From the slightly angled (see on-edge photo) tip it's clear there was a lot more blade length before that last sharpening (and serration of the blade edge). Both the basal edge and the lower lateral blade edges are heavily ground, the base flute-thinned on both faces-one face has a heavier thinning flute, the reverse has multiple strikes to get the edge to the desired thinness (for hafting). The craftsmanship is there, I think you give the 8500BP flint artisan credit for some great skill. The piece is real, period. Shipping is $7.00 due to new postal rates.
